Erith Locksmith

So with it being summer or so I was led to believe, we seem to be busier then normal for this time of year. Normally people are away on holiday or on breaks away. So we have been kept on our toes.

I was contacted by a gentleman in Erith recently, he had seen me in my van and taken my details down. He had purchased a new home so was looking to have the locks changed and the security inspected to make sure it was safe, as well complying with his insurance requirements. I offered to come to his new home and give a free no-obligation quote.

The guy accepted so we arranged a time. We both met at the property. This is where the guy informed me he had seen me in a local petrol station and was impressed with the smart appearance and professional look we have. He said you don’t look like your typical jeans and trainer wearing tradesman with a bashed up van with a windscreen full of papers and rubbish.

I always make a point of asking people how they find us. So we know how and what means they used. Any how we came to the front door which was a nice heavy looking wooden door. This was fitted with a rim cylinder and a deadlock. Once inside it was apparent that a poorly fitted night latch, of poor quality. There was also a 3 lever deadlock. These are not insurance approved and neither do they offer great security. My advice was to fit a Yale bs night latch. This is a nice heavy and quality looking lock. To go with this I suggested at least one Bs deadlock or two if your budget allows and key them alike so that one key operates both.

We checked the back door and that again was a wooden door, with a sash lock fitted. I advised fitting a Bs sashlock and also adding rack bolts to the top and bottom of door. These normally if fitted correctly can only be opened from inside with a star type key. I checked the windows and these were all upvc but the handles were a bit mix and matched. Some windows had no keys and couldn’t be opened. I advised maybe replacing all the handles. That way one key would operate them all and would also lift the look of the windows.

I left my quote with the guy and said this will be the price you pay. Nothing more would be added unless they required anything else further. The guy said he would get back in touch.

Two days later I was called and told to proceed with the job. He had obtained a further 2 quotes. One of which was £115 more then mine the other was £60 cheaper. The reason I was chosen I was informed was purely the fact I was more professional. I wasn’t pushy, and I was clear and broke the quote down so they knew exactly what they was paying for. I also gave them options so they had the choice.

Locksmith Blackheath

Well over last couple weeks as I said in the previous post, it has been really rather busy. A few jobs that come to mind I will write about and share some of the experiences of a day in the life of Locks in the City.

Recently I was called to attend a job in Blackheath SE3. The owner had a upvc door and had left their key in the door on the inside. So when they went out they pulled the door shut, went to lock the door realising they did not have the keys. The customer rang me informing me they required a locksmith to attend as they could not get in. I asked the usual relevant questions to try and figure what is wrong in my mind. The lady informed me that she and the neighbours had tried for about half an hour before finally calling me.
This happens quite often and people try to get them selves back in as they believe they will be footed with an extortionate bill after. Sometimes it ends up having been cheaper to o just called me as many families have found out.

Anyway I arrive at the property within 20 minutes of the ladies call. I pull up outside to find the neighbours, friends and family at the windows trying to pop them open. There is a guy with his hand through the letterbox. There is a long ladder reaching up to the first floor where they have tried opening a window upstairs.

I can see from the van that it is a upvc mechanism, so I jump out of the van go and introduce myself. There is much relief, the lady is talking to me then everyone comes over and is listening, the gentleman who had his hand through the letterbox comes over and is telling me what I need. Apparently he has fitted locks before ha ha. The lady asks how long to open the door. I said I can’t say for 100% but my guess is less then 2 minutes.

I went to the van to get one of my favourite tools. On my way to van I feel a presence over my shoulder. I turn around and a majority of those that were working on the property are behind me walking to the van. More to be nosey of what I had on board. Any how I grab my tool .I have concealed it out of view as I don’t want people to see what I do. More so for the reason as you don’t know these people and if they will copy what you do for the wrong reasons. Again over my shoulder I have my crowd. Mr letterbox decides to shout out ill time you on my phone, if it takes longer then 2 mins we can have a discount to everyone’s laughter. Even I smirked.

I said ok we will discuss the discount, if any, after. He prepped his phone and he counted down from 3. 3…2….1 goooo. 5 seconds and were in. It momentarily went quiet then a gasp of ” oh my god, how did you do that” I wouldn’t explain or show the tool. Funnily no mention of the word discount was used. Though the people who were helping had left damage and scuffs to the plastic and that. The letterbox had been broken, which I repaired.

The lady did then say I should of rang a locksmith first up. I just smiled and sad this is the thing with hindsight. I carried out the training and I carry all the tools for a reason. If it was that easy everyone could be a locksmith.

Locks in the City Locksmiths

Hi All,

It’s been a while since I could sit here and write a new piece for the blog. We have been really busy as a company. One of the most important things we hope you will of noticed is the new clean, fresh easy to navigate website, www.locksinthecity.co.uk .
We have as usual kept busy with lock outs and slam shuts. Though it has been sporadic and patchy in different areas. We have had our daily contract work that we keep up to date with anything from simple locks changes, through to full on security upgrades for insurance purposes. We also carried out a few master systems for a client who runs a few properties as hostels. The landlord rang and asked me to meet him on site at one of his latest properties that was in the midst of being refurbished.
He asked me to master this up to the run along side his other properties. As there was new doors being fitted we opted for euro cylinder sashlock cases to the room doors. This would entail me supply and fitting it all from scratch. There was seven rooms plus one communal door. The landlord wanted the least amount of keys to be given to the tenants. So as with the other properties. We would require a rim cylinder and nightlatch for the communal door as well as a thumbturn euro operating a euro dead lock case. Keyed alike.
So basically one key would open both locks on the front door. Also we had the euros to the room doors working off the same key. So each room would have their own individual key to their rooms, that would only open their room and no one else’s, but also the key would open the locks to the communal door. So the tenant only required one key. The landlords key however was the master key. His key would open all 7 rooms and communal door. We agreed a price and we spent a good 3/4 of a day then installing and it all went well and the landlord was really happy with the outcome.
This is only one of the many services we offer. Another service that has been going well is the mobile on site key cutting service we offer. There is more benefits to this then people realise. One being that you can test the key there and then to ensure a perfect copy has been recreated. So you can in effect try before you buy. It’s getting late now so I will be back tomorrow to write some more.

Recent Events

Again its been a while since my last post. It’s been a busy few months. Although the call out work has quietened down slightly. Our contract work and regular agents have kept me busy. Everything from repossessions through to lock changes for new tenants moving into properties. Also been a large increase in people ringing for getting keys cut.Keys Cut in neon lights

We had a coach company ring who needed 17 padlock keys cut. On arrival at site i was shown to a compound where coaches and mini buses were kept. They complained they were for ever loosing keys and needing them replaced. Although cutting 17 keys would of been highly profitable no one had an original key. So it would of meant me copying from a copy. The easiest option would of been to supply a combination padlock, though they can create other problems people leaving would mean the combination needing to be changed often. Where keys could be given back, however they had no control over people copying their keys by taking it to a local key cutters. So I offered a solution of either going for a restricted keyway section on a removable cored padlock, or go for a access control solution where the fobs can be easily deleted from the system should they go missing or are not returned. They liked the sound of the latter option but wouldn’t commit to spending a large amount just yet. So they opted for a restricted keyway padlock system and are happy with the results.

Then we had to come up with a solution for a customer who had got locked in their flat. Unfortunately the mechanism had failed causing them to be locked inside. I attended and got the door open with out any damage and replaced the faulty part. However prior to us visiting they had, had a so called locksmith turn up who said he would have to remove part of the frame and angle grind the bolts off then supply and fit new mech. Quoting a huge sum of money almost £1300.00.

Thankfully the customer declined and rang us and could not believe the difference in price and what little effort that was required to what she previously been informed. Since that I have attended 6 of the flats to inspect locks. All this because we are willing to go that extra mile. We are not out to manipulate people in to handing out hundreds of pounds when they are in a vulnerable state.

Always ring and get quotes. Don’t be frightened to ask of peoples experience. If they are treating you fairly they will not mind you ringing round for quotes if they are competitive. Again going cheap can be as bad as the most expensive. So do your research.

Rogue Locksmiths

So we’ve been quiet for a little while now. Not because we have nothing to say but purely because we have been busy. Attending all types of jobs. We also visited the locksmith expo in Nottingham where we met up with many other locksmiths from across the country. We all probably spent way to much on tools and stock. This is the benefits of theses shows as they pass the knowledge and tools to make our job easier. Not only that but it makes things better for are customers. Purely by having the up to date knowledge and tools this aids in being able to deal with all situations in a professional manor.

The problem with many incompetent locksmiths or so called locksmiths is that they drill or damage locks. Then replace them, this can lead to the price to the customer doubling or tripling. Not only that inferior parts could be used that may not last, or not give the required security needed. If the worst ever happened the insurance would never cover the cost. It would likely be voided.

The problem we are coming up against is that many people are taking what they think is the cheapest option. Which is understandable in the current climate. The problem is like anything you pay for what you get. Pay the cheapest fee for a locksmith, you are likely to get a cheap and poor service. You need to ask WHY ? WHY are they cheaper, HOW can they be cheaper then everyone else. Your answer will likely be they have little if any training, they are using cheap Chinese locks or second hand locks. Will likely drive around in a car have no business insurance or indemnity insurances. They may also demand to be paid in cash to avoid the taxman and paying their dues.

Over the last few weeks I have attended 5 jobs which were most likely attended by the same locksmith. Each time the customer informed me they called the so called locksmith and they attended site all to polite and couldnt do enough for them. All they were interested in was selling more and earning more by trying to pressure into buying further locks then being offered discounts to do so. Two of the customers agreed to it just to keep the guy quiet.

The reason I was called is the locks developed faults. When the customer called the so called locksmith he became rude and agitated on the phone. Demanding they pay a call out fee for him to attend. Blaming the customer that they must have done something. In all 5 cases I had to change the sub standard locks for more reliable and suited locks for the purpose they were intended for.

So people please invest time in researching. When your locked out its easy to just accept what you hear on the phone as you just want to get in quick. Ask the relevant questions. If the keys are locked in side the property then they can still be used. You just want the door open. If the locksmith tells you that the lock needs replacing then alarm bells should ring. A competent locksmith should be able to open the door using a variety of techniques that will not damage the locks. If they walk up to your door with a drill straight away then that is not a trained locksmith.

Forfeiture of Lease

So its been a little while since I posted last. We have been busy, working our way through a multitude of tasks. Everything from standard lock outs, to attending vacant properties for estate agents and changing locks, ready for the new tenants.

Today however, I was involved in a Commercial forfeiture of lease. The shop that I was called out to in this case, had been ran by a business person that wasn’t paying rent to the landlord. By not paying their rent, this then automatically breaches the lease on the commercial outlet. Therefore the landlord is entitled to get full access to their premises back and evict the non-paying business tenants.

The forfeiture of lease call out today was from a Bailiff firm that I do a large amount of work for. The Boss telephones me and asks on Wednesday if i can cover an early job. I advise that I can do so, no problem. We arrange to carry out the job at 05.00am. That way we are not attending during operational hours of the shop. This makes the job so much easier and convenient for both parties. It’s not nice taking someones livelihood but then again the people who take out the lease and don’t pay are taking the landlords livelihood.

I meet the head of the bailiff firm at the address, at the agreed time. We find that the premises has 2 Chubb 3G114e deadlocks. These are considered high security locks for insurance purposes. They are fitted on the right hand side of the door. This may panic some ‘driller killers’ or ‘so called locksmiths’ that drill locks when not necessary to so. Due to lack of skill the drilling often penetrates right through the hard-plate and the bolt when trying to access the stump or gate.  Although drilling locks is frowned upon in the locksmith industry in general, if a lock has to be drilled then this must be done accurately. With pin point precision. If not, then it will make for more work, potentially higher costs to the client and cause unnecessary damage.

On this occasion I chose to use my pin and cam decoder in the hope that the locks are keyed alike. Meaning one key will operate both, rather then two separate keys. This will save a large amount of time, as I will only have to decode one lock rather then two. In theory, the decoder will then open the other. Using this method is fairly quick if experienced. So I manage to decode the first lock relatively quickly. The adrenalin rush when the tool rotates and the lock opens is immense. I take the tool out and place into the second lock in the hope that the other lock will open. I turn the tool and sure enough it rotates 360 degrees and the door is open!

The bailiff is happy as the job has been completed, trouble free. As I carry a large variety of locks, I am able to replace the locks on a like for like basis. Therefore no adjustment is needed. I re-lever one of the locks so that one set of keys operate both locks. All in all, we were on site for 30 minutes. Jobs like this are welcomed and enjoyed!

Typical British Weather

So last night, that being Sunday 10th February. I got a few local jobs Mainly slam shuts where the doors have slammed shut behind people locking them out. Then around 10pm I was contacted by a family who had got locked out but had chosen to open the door them selves. The state of the door when I arrived was unbelievable. It was a composite door that consists of timber inside with a thin pressed metal outer skin. The whole door was buckled and twisted. The door had numerous dents where it had been jemmied with screwdrivers shovels and a crow bar. In the process of the door being twisted they managed to shatter and smash the doubled glazed panel in the door.

Due to the fact that the door was so badly damaged they couldn’t then get the door to shut. So this is when they decided to call upon my services. Though by now the damage had been done and was irreversible. I had to replace both the rim cylinder as well as the night latch but also the deadlock need to be replaced. I informed the customer that I would secure the property as best I can but it’s not going to be pretty and will be a temporary fix. A whole new front door and frame is now required due to the extensive damage.  I don’t like being the bearer of bad news or to appear to rub salt into the wound but I told them if they had of rung me before hand it would of saved them so much money. It would of only required me to attend and pick the locks open on the door. It would of only taken approx 30 mins.

They were absolutely gutted which is to be expected. They realised that they should of really got a professional in from the start. I have invested heavily in picks and decoders and spent hundreds if not thousands of hours practising to pick locks without damage. Drilling a lock, or causing damage in order to open a lock should always be a last resort as its not necessary. Only time it should possibly be done is if a lock has failed or broken in the locked position.

So the moral of today’s post is always to call on a professional in your hour of need. It will save you money in the long run. As proper locksmiths will always carry the correct tools and possess all the knowledge and skills to make sure the job is carried out correctly and to the highest standards.

Locks in the City

Hi I’m Paul Horton,

Locksmith performing a lock upgradeI’m the owner and founder of Locks in the City. I got involved with locksmithing in the year 2004. I had been looking for a change of career as I was working in retail and doing long stressful shifts. So I started by looking for a new car in order to get about and look for a new job and if I was successful in finding a new job I would have reliable transport. So I bought a copy of the auto trader. Whilst browsing I discovered in the back businesses for sale. Amongst them was an opportunity to buy an existing business in a locksmith company. This got me intrigued as I had always been very hands on and interested in mechanical design and engineering so locksmithing went hand in hand.

At the time I used the internet to delve further in to the locksmith world reading up on the life of a locksmith and the expectations. My dad decided to make some picks based on some templates that we acquired. This was the start of the addictive world of lock picking. After about 3 days I had managed to pick open a cheap rim cylinder and the buzz from opening something that is designed to keep you and your property safe was immense.

Over the coarse of the next year, I slept, ate, read and breathed locksmithing and I was picking locks with ease and moved on through the different levels of security. I went from opening low end 5 pin cylinders, to 5 pin cylinders with anti-pick pins, to 6 pin high end cylinders then onto dimple 7 pin cylinders. I was also opening dead locks and sash locks using curtain picks. My arsenal of tools and picks grew my knowledge was steadily growing and I eventually got a job with a repossession company. This wasn’t the most pleasant of jobs but it was a good stepping stone in to putting my knowledge into practice. I gained great knowledge and experience and opened many of the locks on the market.

I eventually decided to work for my self and took the gamble. I invested heavily in stock, tools, decoders and key cutting equipment, not forgetting the van. This has to be the best decision I ever made. The gratitude from helping people in need, is what makes it so worthwhile and the reason i continue to strive and keep learning and practicing.
